Search by size in Finder

Press Command-F in Finder, choose This Mac, and add a File Size condition such as greater than 1 GB. Use List view and sort by size to surface movies, disk images, and large archives quickly.

Results may exclude folders you cannot access and Finder does not naturally aggregate nested folders. It is excellent for single large files, but less useful when an app library contains 80 GB spread across thousands of items.

Check common large-file types first

Old .dmg installers, .zip archives, and duplicate videos in Downloads are usually easy to judge. Next check device backups, virtual-machine disks, game resources, photo libraries, and video projects. Never delete by extension alone; reveal the enclosing folder and identify its source.

  • DMGs and archives left after installation
  • Exports and proxy media from delivered projects
  • Unused virtual machines and old operating-system images
  • Device backups that have a verified replacement

Use folder totals to cover Finder's blind spot

Tens of thousands of small files can fill a disk even when no single item looks exceptional. A treemap aggregates by directory, so node_modules, simulator data, or chat attachments form a visible block.

Scan with Diskly and drill down from the largest directory. Use the path and file types to identify ownership. If you cannot recognize app-managed data, clean it inside the app or follow the vendor's uninstall instructions.

Make three checks before deletion

Confirm the file is not the only copy, the current project no longer references it, and the backup actually opens. A cloud icon is not proof that a multi-gigabyte upload completed; verify sync status or test from another device.

Move files to Trash first and keep working normally. Empty Trash after you know no link broke and no app needs the data.
